When Steph moved into her house in 2013, we converted a hall closet into a landing zone. This was pre-MDP so there's no video or step by step process! It's been a really great functional addition to her home.

Along with a storage bench, shelf, and hooks, we added a small holder for her keys and one pair of sunglasses utilizing an old picture frame.

It has served her well but she has now collected additional sunglasses for kayaking, hiking, and more. She needed more storage space.

Here's what we did to make a larger storage space for keys and sunglasses.

Materials/Tools:

    • Wrapping paper

    • Round Brass Rod Assortment (Amazon)

    • OOK 55310 French Cleat (Amazon)

How to make a wall hung key sunglasses holder using found material including faux pallet wood.
Because we have a large collection of scrap wood, we "shopped" our supplies to see what we had that could be used. We came up with the back of a kitchen cabinet and some faux pallet wood that would work.
To make the sides, we cut down a piece of the pallet wood on the table saw.

We are using two metal rods that we also found in our stash which will hold the sunglasses. The width of the unit is based on the length of the rods.

Once the measurements were established, based on the rod width and the length of the two rows of sunglasses and keys, the backboard was also cut down on the table saw.
Lastly, the top and sides were cut to length on the miter saw for the key holder.

We will hang this with a French cleat and inset the back so it sits flat against the wall.
To hang the key/sunglass holder we will be using a French cleat. We are insetting the backboard about three quarters of an inch using square dowels so that the unit will sit flat against the wall. If we didn't do this then the unit would stick out from the wall and not lay flat.
We determined the placement of the rods by putting the sunglasses and keys into place. Once this was done, we marked the placement of the rods on each side of the sides.

We used a fun wrapping paper of rainbow snowflakes wrapping paper on the background of the key holder.
When I made the original key holder, I used a piece of wrapping paper as the background. We decided to do the same with this new enlarged version. We sprayed the board with spray adhesive and then laid the board on top of the wrapping paper to adhere.
We used a screw-in cup hook in the center of the top to hold the keys.

We used a drill bit the same diameter of the rod to make the holes for the two rods.

The back piece was too thin to screw into so we used Gorilla Glue contact adhesive to secure the French cleat into place.

Here it is! Hung in place and filled up ready to be used. This is right outside the garage so it's easy to grab what you need and then head out to the car.

This is the first change to the landing zone since we first installed it in 2013. The next project will be finding fabric to recover the bench cushion. it's see a lot of use of the years!

This is a very simple project but like its predecessor, it fits the space perfectly and functions well. We love the cute snowflake design behind the sunglasses. It certainly blurs the seasons.

Since we are now on the hunt for new bench fabric, what color do you think we should look for to replace the green or should we stick with the apple green?
