My second grandson wanted new shelving for his room so that he could display his finished Lego sets. He has lots of open wall space perfect for installing custom shelving.

After measuring the space and consulting with him on what he wanted, we got started.

Materials/Tools:

    • (2) 1 in. x 10 in. x 10 ft. Pine Common Board (Home Depot)

    • (8) Crates & Pallet 10 in. Black J Steel Shelf Bracket (Home Depot)

    • (5) Everbilt #14 x 1-1/2 in. and #12 x 3/4 in. Black Heavy Duty Shelf Bracket Screw Kit (12-Pack) (Home Depot)

    • BEHR Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner (Home Depot)

    • Minwax Red Oak Interior Stain (Lowes)

    • BEHR Satin Clear Polyurethane (Home Depot)

    • Magnetic Stud Finder (Home Depot)

    • RYOBI Whole Stud Finder (Home Depot)

    • Center Punch & Nail Set Tool (Amazon)

    • Xena Steel-toe Boots (Xena Workwear)

Buying common boards at the Home Depot.
We picked up two of these 10ft boards.
We are using Everbilt screws to attach the crate and pallet shelf brackets.
Also, got these for attaching the brackets.
Cutting the boards into six feet and four feet lengths for the shelving.
On the miter saw, we cut each of the 10ft boards into 6ft and 4ft pieces.
These boards required lots of prep before they were ready for stain. Both sides were sanded to a smooth finish.

To insure the stain would go on evening, I used this Behr's pre-stain wood conditioner first. It's a quick step and really does make a difference in how the stain goes on.

I used a Minwax interior stain to finish the boards followed by polyurethane once the stain was dry.

I used Behr satin finish polyurethane. I really like the looks of this poly. Those common boards looked really good once I was finished!

My grandson wanted a little
My grandson wanted a little "Jungle Cruise" look to his finished shelving. We decided to use chain link that we spray painted black.
We transported the finished shelves wrapped in these moving blankets. They made the trip unharmed!

For this project, we are tying out this Ryobi stud finder. We've had it quite a while but had never used it. Our go-to stud finder is an expensive magnetic one that is easy to use and pretty accurate.
For this project, we are tying out this Ryobi stud finder. We've had it quite a while but had never used it. Our go-to stud finder is an inexpensive magnetic one that is easy to use and pretty accurate. This Ryobi one detects the start and end of the wall studs. The other one finds the nails that are within the studs.
We located all the studs so that we could screw the brackets in without the use of a drywall anchor. These Crates and Pallet brackets are sold without hardware so if you use these, be sure to pick up the appropriate screw packets.

Attaching the Disney Jungle Cruise shelves to the wall.
We attached all the brackets to the wall in the same manner.

We installed the bottom shelves first and then worked on the top two.

The finishing touch was adding the painted chain to each end of the shelves with modified pipe strap clamps. See the video for a closer look at the modification.

He was running out of floor space for his Lego so up was the only option! As you can see, he has plenty of wall space.

Here are the Lego sets in place on the new Disney Jungle cruise inspired shelving.
And the AFTER
The shelves were fairly expensive, but we felt it was necessary to custom build these for the space.

It was nice to get these shelves built for my grandson. They join the two bookcases he helped build for this same room the summer of 2024.

After completing these, the other two grands asked for shelving for their rooms as well. For them, because of their limited wall space, custom shelving was not required so we headed to the local Ikea for their new shelves.

As for that Ryobi stud finder. It worked pretty well, although because it doesn't find the metal within the stud, where we needed to place a screw was right on top of one of the screws in the stud. We had to move that bracket placement down because of it.

Our magnetic stud finder will still be our "go-to" tool going forward.
