We've had a large Ruggable brand washable rug in Steph's house for five years. Every time she wants to wash it I kind of groan as it's a big deal to put back in place.

But not this time! We finally found the secret sauce to getting it easily back in place after washing. Along the way, Steph shares this tip and others about washing this rug.
How to wash a large Ruggable rug in the washing machine.
Here's the rug with all the dog beds and ottomans removed. We still very much like this pattern and color.
The Ruggable has two parts, the cover and the pad. The cover is washable the pad is not. Be sure to vacuum the cover before removing it.

Because of the texture of the base it does collect hair, animal fur, dust, and other debris.
Once we removed the cover for washing, we used a vacuum to clean the top and the bottom. Because of the texture of the base it does collect hair, animal fur, dust, and other debris.
We used a lint roller to pick up anything the vacuum did not get.

Work in small sections to get the cover onto the Ruggable pad without wrinkles.
Okay, here's the secret to putting the cover back on the pad without getting a lot of wrinkles. Roll the pad and cover separately. Unroll a little of each and work a small section at a time pressing firmly to attach the cover to the pad.
Working slowly and unrolling a little of the pad and cover worked very successfully to get the cover back on without a lot of wrinkles.

The only issue we have had with the Ruggable over the five years is the corners curl up. Steph bought this product called, NeverCurl to remedy the problem.

The Ruggable has held up really well.
All clean. It looks as good as it did five years ago!
Figuring out how to efficiently connect the cover to the pad has made washing this 8x10 feet rug way less of a chore!

Tip: After washing your Ruggable, you may want to clean out your washing machine filter. If you don’t have a manual, you should be able to find one online. Both the washer at my house and Steph’s each have a little pull down door near the bottom that houses the filter and a drainage tube. You will release water so plan ahead with a shallow container to collect the water and plenty of puppy pads or paper towels.

And, while you’re at it, make sure you’ve cleaned out the dryer filter.
