While Steph and I were installing the custom two-level shelving in one of my grandson's room, the other two requested shelving for their rooms.

We certainly were not going to turn down their requests but we also knew we couldn't do custom shelving since we didn't have the means to do so with all our tools and supplies in Tallahassee not Orlando.

Since we couldn't do custom, we looked online for ready-made options. Our best option and most convenient was floating shelves from Ikea. There's an Ikea in Orlando, so off we went to explore and shop.

Materials/Tools:

    • IKEA Lack Wall Shelf (IKEA)

    • Rubbermaid FastTrack Garage Rail Hardware Pack (Home Depot)

    • Magnetic Stud Finder (Home Depot)

    • Makita 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Brushless Cordless 1/2 in. Driver-Drill Kit, 3.0Ah (Home Depot)

Check the time Ikea opens so you don't get there too early. Shopping for floating shelving.
If you are shopping at Ikea, be sure to check what time they open. We got there after ten, but they don't open until 11! Oops! We decided not to wait around to "rope drop"* Ikea, but used our wait time to go to the nearby Costco and look around. Costco stores are similar, but their are some differences in what they carry so it's always fun to see what they have that ours doesn't have. *"rope drop" It's a term used at theme parks when you get there before it opens where you literally stand behind a rope until it opens. When it does, it's a free for all!
How to shop the Ikea store.
Shopping at Ikea can be overwhelming. There are three areas: upstairs is the Showroom where they have things displayed as you'd use them, downstairs is Market Hall where you'll find bins and shelves full of products, and lastly, this Self-Serve Warehouse area where we found our shelves. When you find what you want in the upstairs area, take note of where it is located in the warehouse so you can find it easily. Everything is well marked and it's quite easy to find what you're looking for. Also, there are computer kiosks, where you can search for the location of your item.
Locating the Ikea Lack Wall Shelf in the self-serve Ikea warehouse.
We found our shelving quite easily. All sizes and colors were located here.
How to install the Ikea lack shelf support.
We started by finding the wall studs. It is preferable to install the metal support to studs. We were only able to utilize one stud.
Drilling pilot holes for the Ikea lack shelf metal support.
We drilled pilot holes for the screws and used a larger drill bit to drill holes for the wall anchors.
There is a right side and a wrong side to the support. Make sure you install the support with the side down that has the screw holes on the rod that support the shelf. You will use these holes to attach the shelves to the support in the last step.

Once the supports are in place, slide the shelf onto the support.

Once we finished in one room, we moved onto the second. We are using the Lack shelf in white for my granddaughter's room.

We installed the support in the same way, but here we decided to add washers to make the screws even more secure. The heads of the screws are almost the same size as the holes so. the washer make them hold better.
Installing the Ikea lack floating shelves.
We positioned these shelves lower but in a way that the lower one can be moved to above the top shelf and it not be too high in that position. As my granddaughter grows, so can these shelves.
We used a combination of screws into studs and wall anchors to install the Lack Ikea shelves.
This is a look at the wall anchors in place. We were only able to utilize one stud.
Here's that closeup of attaching the shelves to the rods in the shelf support.

These fit perfectly in this space. The placement floor to top of shelf is 44-3/4in and 12in between shelves.

And here are the finished shelving in my granddaughter's room. The placement floor to top of shelf is 33-1/4in and 10in between.
These Ikea Lack (item number: 502.821.82) were a great option for the spaces in my grandchildren's room. They were easy to install and looked great when finished.

Actually, we ended up installed a set in the guest room as well because we liked them so much!
