This is certainly not the subject matter most would like to experience or talk about. But, due to the manner the rats were getting into the attic, it's seems like a subject that does need to be discussed!

Product:

    • Amerimax Home Products Vinyl Rodent Guard (Home Depot)

    • Xcluder Rodent Control Fill Fabric, Large DIY Kit with Inspection and Fit Tool, Stainless Steel Wool, Stops Rats and Mice (Amazon)

    • Kritter Caps (Kritter Caps)

How we discovered rats in the attic.
Absolutely no one wants to deal with vermin in the attic or worse yet, in the house. Thankfully, the rats were confined to the attic. The first hint that something was amiss was a running sound that sounded like it was coming from the gutters, plus a rat was seen exiting one of them. It was time to investigate!
Looking for rats in the gutter but first cleaning them the the Ryobi gutter cleaning tool.
Since, we thought the rats might be making a home in the gutters, we first cleaned them with our Ryobi gutter cleaning tool. I followed along with a camera to get a birds-eye view of what was happening.
Using Amerimax home products vinyl rodent guards to block the opening of the gutter downspout to keep rats out of the gutters.
No evidence was found that rats were making a home or getting into the house via the gutters. But since we had seen one exiting, Steph found these gutter covers to prevent any rodents from getting up into the gutters. The covers can be easily removed to clean out any collected leaves and debris.
Setting up a camera to capture rats going up and down the corner trim on the vinyl siding.
After hearing sounds in the attic over her bedroom, Steph called in our pest control service that also specializes in rodent control. They thought the rats might be entering the house via the vinyl siding trim on the corner of the house. Steph set up a camera to see if that was true.
This is where the pest control company thought the rats might be getting in. This is basically a freeway to the attic for rats!

The rats were getting in via the trim on the vinyl siding.
Evidence that this is EXACTLY how they were getting in!
How rats got into the attic!
Could this be any grosser?!!!!
Those beady eyes are a couple of rats ignoring the baited trap.
And wait, there's more waiting their turn! By the way, those rats totally ignored the traps that the pest control company set out.
XCluder Rodent Control Fill Fabric was stuffed up into the vinyl siding corner trim.
Over the course of several weeks consisting of a couple of visits a week, the pest control company declared the attic free of rats. To keep them from coming back in the "freeway" needed to be blocked. This product is designed to do just that.
Cutting the ECluder rodent fill fabric to block the hole from the rats.
Rodents don't like the feel of this. It is stuffed up into the hole and seems to stay in place without any additional support.
Krittercaps is designed especially to fill the base of the vinyl siding corner trim.

It pushes into place and the snug fit assure it won't fall out.
This is how the corner trim looks--it's a straight shot into your attic!

This is a good look at that XCluder rodent control fill fabric that Steph put in place before using the KritterCap.
Steph added the rodent control fill fabric under the KritterCap for a little extra protection.
Well, that was probably more than you wanted to know about rats in the attic! It was a process to get rid of them and then to clean up the mess left behind, but they are gone.

Steph lives in an area with lots of natural areas, so it makes a good habitat for vermin. Unfortunately, for some reason, they decided Steph's attic would make a great home.

Steph's was talking with her backyard neighbor and they were having an issue with rats in the house as well.  They share the same green space as Steph. Another neighbor also had them, but they (shudder) had them inside the house!

Bottom line, if you have vinyl siding and you have rats, take a look at the corner trim. If it is totally open, that might be the entry point.
