Both the bathrooms at Steph's house were in need of a refresh. She had recently taken notice of how shabby the cabinets were looking and that the handles and hinges never matched.

We decided to tackle the cabinet refresh as a weekend project to see if it was possible to do it in a single weekend.

How to refresh a bathroom in a weekend.
To make a weekend project work, you really need to get all your supplies together before starting. - Paint Roller - Paint Brush - Paint - Painters tape - Handles - Hinges - Electric Screwdriver.
Use Behr semi-gloss cabinet, door, and trim enamel paint for the bathroom refresh.
We used the same Behr paint we used when we painted Steph's kitchen cabinets. Since that time, Behr has come out with a paint just for cabinets. If we were buying new paint, this is what we would choose.

We started with the smaller of the two bathrooms by clearing out the cabinets and drawers.

We used these collapsable crates to store all the stuff from the bathroom. We eventually. moved these out of that hallway as they were in the way. Thank goodness it was just a weekend of mess.
Use a battery powered screwdriver to remove the cabinet hardware including the handles and hinges.
Once everything was emptied, Steph removed the hardware and the hinges from the cabinets and drawers. A battery powered screwdriver made quick work of this.
And don't forget to label the cabinets and drawers so they are easy to put back in the right place. We used sticky notes for this.

With all the hardware removed and everything laid out in the garage it was time to clean the drawer fronts and doors. We used Krud Kutter cleaner and a magic eraser to clean.

First step in a bathroom refresh is to clean the doors, frame, and drawer fronts. We used Krud Kutter and a magic eraser.
The cabinet frame was cleaned the same way.
We lightly sanded the doors and drawer fronts.

We also lightly sanded the frame using a wet/dry vac to collect the dust to keep the area clean.

We always use a tack cloth to remove the last of the sanding dust, but realized we didn't have one so we improvised. We wrapped a sanding block with Press n Seal with the sticky side up and it worked great

Use Glad Press n Seal as a tack cloth.
The sticky side of Glad Press n Seal worked great as an improvised tack cloth. We actually always keep a roll in both of our garages for wrapping paint brushes and paint trays, but now we have another use for it!
No tack cloth no problem, use Glad Press n Seal.
You can see in this picture how much dust the Press n Seal picked up. It worked even better than I thought it would.
Use painters tape to remove lint from a new paint roller.
Be sure to always de-lint the roller before use as I'm doing here. Be aggressive with the tape to get all the loose lint removed.
Painting the bathroom cabinets.
This paint roller was the perfect choice.

I used a brush on the details and sides and the roller for the large area. This technique worked well.
Use a Stinger paintbrush for cutting in work.
This is the brush I'm using. It makes cutting in as you see here, pretty effortless.
use Frog Tape where needed.
We used painters tape around the medicine cabinet. We are using Frog Tape which needed to be dampened after it is applied. This activates the PaintBlock Technology to form a micro-barrier along the edges of the tape to prevent paint bleed. I just run a damp paper towel along the tape.
After the doors were dry to the touch, Steph marked and attached the hinges.

Adding the new hinges to the bathroom cabinet doors.
She again used the power screwdriver to screw the hinges into place.
Here are the doors with hinges and handles installed.

The new hinges are not identical to the original so Steph had to mark new screw holes in the cabinets. She drilled pilot holes.

Done with the first bathroom!
The finishing touch are to add white felt bumpers to the cabinet doors.
Bumpers come with the hinge packs, but we bought white felt ones to use. When we did the kitchen cabinets many years ago, we used the bumpers that were with the hinges, but over time, the black bumpers left black marks on the white cabinets. Hopefully, these bumpers will solve the problem.
We had some leftover G-Floor vinyl flooring that Steph cut to size to use in the primary bathroom cabinets.

We painted these bathroom cabinets and drawers and gave them new handles and hinges in a weekend.

We didn't get both bathrooms done in the weekend, but we came pretty close. We got all the painting done, but had to wait until Monday to put the doors back on in the primary bathroom.

If we had not had to make two trips to the Home Depot for a roller and an extra handles we would have met our goal!

Depending on the size and amount of bathrooms, this project can be done in a weekend!
