Winter Decor: Steph's Fireplace Mantel

Steph enlisted my help to design a holiday vignette for her fireplace mantel. She wanted it to be rustic & I wanted it to have a little sparkle as well. She loves snow so I knew that aspect had to be incorporated. She likes to keep her decor up past Christmas, so she tends to go for a winter theme rather than traditional Christmas decor.
The idea behind the mantel design was to “use what we had,” not go out & buy new. Items for the mantle were thrifted, bought after Christmas really cheap, were things she already had, or things borrowed from me. It all came together pretty cohesively.

Thrifted:
  • Modern silver ornament Christmas tree from Crate & Barrel. A bargain at $10 from the thrift.
  • 2 large rustic frames, $8 for the pair. The black “snow” picture is the backing from this frame which I painted in a flat black spray paint & then splatters with white gesso although white craft paint could be used. Notice how the video camera (Steph’s Nest home security camera) kind of disappears into the black background of the picture.
  • Battery operated silver stems, $1
  • 2 Wood trees, $1
  • Basket, repainted, $2
  • Wood Slab, $1 (this had a picture decoupaged to it which I sanded off)

After Christmas Sales in past years:
  • Stick star tree topper, Target $6
  • Lights under the 'snow', Phillips $15
  • Glass pinecones ornaments, set of 5 $3
  • Filler- red berries, foral pics, Michaels .12 each
  • White snowballs, Dillards $1 each
  • 3 silver snowflakes, Target .50
  • 2 tall glass vases, Homegoods $7 each
  • White branches, Target $2
  • Glitter fill which covers the 'snow', Target $1 (Steph will be cleaning this up until February, hehehe.)

Borrowed
  • Set of four plug in faux candles

In Steph’s Stash
  • Woodland creatures were gifts
  • 'Snow' which is simply batting
  • 'Tags' on the metal tree are gift tags from Target
  • Santa, a childhood toy—who can put a price on that!
  • 3 glasses with rocks to hold silver stems
  • Glass marble fill for the vases

I love that metal tree with the tags! In my house, it would be overflowing with notes from my 7 year old. :)
