One of the things I had my electrician add when I remodeled my house in 2012 was to put an outlet above the kitchen cabinets in anticipation of adding lights at some point. A while back Steph and I saw these Philips Hue lights (shown below) on sale at Home Depot and we picked them up for my kitchen. I knew I wanted remote control lights and these smart lights fit the bill.

The hardest thing about installing these lights was dragging the 10" tall ladder from Steph's house and brining it into my house! Check out the simple install for these lights in the video above.

Today we are installing the philips hue light strip starter kit. The Hue system uses a bridge that plugs into your wifi router. This allows you to control your hue lightbulbs with your phone.

The starter kit comes with everything you need to get the system up and running. The instructions show you step by step how to get started.

After unpacking, we plug the bridge into my home wifi router.

I downloaded the hue app to my iPhone and followed the prompts for setup.

Now we head back to the kitchen to lay the light strips out. First we laid them down to get placement right. I was forward thinking and had an outlet installed above my cabinets so power was not an issue for these lights!

Once we liked the placement we removed the paper to stick the lights in place.

I can change the lights using my phone. There are pre-made scenes I can pick from or pick whatever color I want each strip to be.

The lights can be programed to go off when I leave the house and come on when I get home. Very cool!

After this install, I wanted more lights! Steph ordered me three soft white bulbs for my lamps. I have two lamps that were on old school timers that would turn on and off at night. Now I can chuck the old timers and use the hue app on my phone to schedule them to turn on and off.

We also installed one of the new bulbs in my bedroom. The light will gradually turn off at night and back on in the morning.
