DIY for Homeowners

Workshop Wednesday: Last Minute Holiday Decor!

12/12/2018

This Fast DIY is just in time for holiday decorating outside. My standard means of decorating with outdoor lights ended up not being usable this year. I thought, "what do I have in the garage that would work?" Ahhh, wood stakes, a handful of wood craft stars, paint, a Surebonder Light Tacker and hot glue gun would do the job!

If you've not put out your outdoor lights, try out this last minute outdoor decorating idea.

Materials:

  • 1 (or more) package of 24” stakes (Home Depot)

  • 12 oz. Deep Forest Green Camouflage Spray Paint (Home Depot)

  • Holiday Light Tacker Staple Gun (Surebonder)

  • Surebonder 60-watt hot glue gun (Surebonder)

  • HomeRight 4.7 ft. x 5.6 ft. White Polyester Medium Spray Shelter (Home Depot)

They are actually sitting in the medium size HomeRight spray shelter
I laid out the stakes and sprayed them with Rust-Oleum camouflage paint. I did not sand the stakes. They are actually sitting in the medium size HomeRight spray shelter since I didn't have the option to spray these outside due to rain. I did, however, position the tent with the outside pointing to the open garage. and I used a fan to push the spray overspray outside before closing the garage door.
Using the Surebonder Light Tacker and insulated staples.
We spaced the stakes about 30" apart. The Surebonder Light Tacker was loaded with the light tacker staples and plastic insulator.
A single wire of the four light strand was tacked into place.
A single wire of the four light strand was tacked into place. If you don't have a Light Tacker you could also secure a cup hook into the top of the stake to hold the lights.
Using a rubber mallet, I pounded the stake into place.

Using a Surebonder 60 wall battery powered glue gun.
I spray painted some wood stars gold and hot glued them into place at the top of the stakes. I will probably go back and hot glue some garland in place as well.
The Home Depot App lights all ready to glow along the edge of my sidewalk!
This super quick outdoor decorating idea is done!

Here it is at night all lit up. Those are App Lights from The Home Depot. They are programable via an app. They can actually be used year round as there are color settings for all the holidays. Note: My neighbors are decorating overachievers! Ha, but I do love their efforts!
