With a few readily available materials, we are going to show you how to give your phone a 'hand!' Ha, couldn't resist the pun! We are making a 'hand' stand for your phone. With this stand, your phone is always, 'handy!' (Promise, that's the last one!)

Take a look at the video or read on for the tutorial.
We are using Quikrete mortar mix for our hand stand.
To make the stand, you'll need the Quikrete mix of your choice. We are using mortar mix, which we picked up in this cute, easy to manage 10 pound bag. Grab a bowl that you don't care about, a mixing stick or spoon, water, and a plastic glove. You'll also need to have some support materials at the ready to 'pose' your hand.

Product:

  • Quikrete 10 lb. Mortar Mix (Home Depot)

  • Plastic/Rubber Glove

  • Mixing Bowl

Mix the Quikrete to the consistency of brownie batter.
We added enough mortar mix to fill a plastic glove, added water and mixed until it was the consistency of brownie batter. Just add water a little bit at a time so as not to add to much to make it soupy.
Fill the glove with the Quikrete mortar mix.
This next step is easier with a buddy. Have your helper hold the glove open as you put small amounts of the mix into the glove. Add a little and have the helper move it down into the fingers. It's important to be sure the fingers are full. Continue to fill until about 2 to 3 inches from the opening of the glove.
Use what you have to position the glove into place.
These quart stain cans are perfect to position the glove against.
We used a second can to hold the glove upright.

Use something to make a flat back and indentation for the phone to sit.
Now it's time to make an impression where the phone will sit. We are using a small spackle container. It makes the perfect indentation.
Prop something heavy to keep everything in place.
Lastly, position something heavy against the container, but be sure not to let it rest on the fingers. Readjust the thumb if needed. It it doesn't sit where you want it, you can put something under it to keep it propped into position. This thumb didn't need any extra help.
Let the hand cure for 24 hours before removing the glove.

Remove the glove.
Cut and peel away the glove. Work carefully as to not break off a finger or two. Let it continue to cure a couple more days.
These Quikrete concrete hands are a perfect place to keep your phone
All finished. These concrete hands are a perfect place to keep your phone "handy!"
This version was made with Quikrete countertop mix leftover from another project.

We painted the divots with gold paint.
We added a little gold paint to this one to highlight, in theory, the imperfections!

We used both of these concrete hand stands in the workshop to securely hold our phones. Even though they are practical, we love how whimsical they are!
