Here's a super simple project that comes together really quickly. It's perfect for crafting with your grandkids or niblings (that's your nieces and nephews!)

Head to the Dollar Tree to pick up all but the bird seed and you'll be on your way to your own wild kingdom.

Materials:

  • Glass Canning Jar (Dollar Tree)

  • Jar Hanging Lid (Dollar Tree)

  • Stones (Dollar Tree)

  • Nylon Cable Ties (Dollar Tree)

Shopping at the Dollar Tree for the bird feeding supplies.
Steph actually had one of the jar tops but had forgotten where she got it. She did a little research and realized she had gotten it at our Dollar Tree.
Pick up a Mason jar with screw off lid at the dollar store.
The Dollar Tree has lots of canning jars. I like that these have no designs on the sides. You could also use a mason jar that you already have. A jelly jar would be perfect for this.
These hanging lids fit a standard regular size mason jar.
The hanging lids are located on these hang strips near the glassware. Keep you eyes open for them so you don't miss them.
These rocks are located in the dollar tree aisle with the vase filler.
We picked up a bag of rocks to act as filler for the feeder.
Zip ties or nylon cable ties can be found in the tool/automotive section of the Dollar Tree.
We really wanted a "s" hook but we did not find any in the store. We decided zip ties would work to secure the hanging portion to the underside of the gazebo.
Here are all our supplies along with the wild birdseed we got at Target.

Rinse the vase filler rocks with water to clean them up.
The first step is to give the rocks a rinse to be sure they are clean. If you have time, let them dry out in the sun or just dry them with a towel.
Fill the bird feeder with rocks.
Fill the jar with the now clean rocks. Use enough to fill halfway or even higher.
We used Kaytee Wild Bird Food in our feeder.
Fill the jar with bird seed. We didn't know what seed to get, but since this one has a cardinal on it and we have cardinals in the yard, we thought this would work!
Add the hanging lid from the dollar store to make the bird feeder.
Add the hanging lid.
The feeders are now ready to hang.
The feeders are now ready to hang.
Zip tie the bird feeder to the underside of the gazebo.
A "s" hook would be easier, but the zip tie will hold the feeders much more securely. Unscrew the jar, zip tie the chain, and put the jar back in place.
The Dollar store bird feeder in place.
Ready for bird visitors!
Yes, the cardinals like it!
Bird feeder 1.0--fail! The birds liked it but so did the squirrels and an occasional rat! This is when Steph decided she needed a better option.
The simple dollar tree bird feeder attracts the cardinals to the yard.
Bird feeder 2.0--success. Bobby the cardinal likes it!
A covered area is best to keep rain out of the bird feeder.
This hook would work if there was a cover over it, but with all the rain we have in Florida, it would be gross in no time.
This spring a cardinal couple built a nest under the patio umbrella at Steph's house. They successful hatched two eggs.

We were out of town when the babies flew away so we didn't get to see them. Steph put up the feeders with the hope that the babies would eventually feed at them.

Love this. I love my bird and squirrel feeders, but it's getting harder to fill them and put them back up. I already have jars and this would be so much easier. thanks
