We travel to New York City every couple of years and do our best to see as many Broadway shows as possible while we're there (our personal best is 9 on one trip!). Steph has been very good about saving a Playbill as a souvenir from each show. We now have quite a collection! Steph wanted a way to organize and display the Playbills and came up with the idea for the DIY Memory Keeper box. This could be adapted for many types of collections.

We used a brand new Diablo blade in our circular saw....

...it cut like butter! We made our shorter cuts on the miter saw.

We used this pair of DeWalt drills, the Drill/Driver and Impact Driver along with impact bits in our project. The tools are battery operate and very compact in size.

A Forstner bit was used to create holes for our "lights."

The surface of the front was washed in a watered down yellow craft paint.

We used wood glue and a Ryobi brad nailer to assemble the box.

The inside of the box was lined with red velvet. Pieces were cut to fit the back/front edge, sides, and inside top.

Cardboard upholstery tack strip was used. The strip was placed on the back of the velvet, glued into place with fabric glue, and folded towards the back. This was then glued into the box.

Velvet was glued to the top and then the wood was secured into place with the Ryobi AirStrike brad nailer.

The outside of the box was painted in a watered down black paint and covered with vintage Playbill advertisements using Mod Podge.

The Playbill word was printed in reverse onto the glossy side of sticker paper (stickers removed), placed onto contact paper and secured into place with the brayer.

The Playbill.com logo was also added but without the use of the contact paper. Handle the transferred image carefully and don't cover with any type of water based product (like Mod Podge) because the image will smear. We finished with a spray on clear finish.

The marqee "lights," which we previously sprayed painted with metallic silver, were hot glued into place using the Ryobi hot glue gun. (Such a useful tool!)

Lastly, the piano hinge was screwed into place.

There is lot of extra room, because you know, there are lot of shows we need to see in the future!

Its fun when crafting and woodworking come together in a project. Think about how you could incorporate something like this for a collection you have. If you finish the bottom and set it on the back, you now have a box where you could store your collected treasures! It's a versatile design.
