Steph has been working on a manuscript for a book, Discovering My Scars, about her life. It's a tough read, but ultimately it's a story of hope. She recently received copies of the book to sell, prior to the official publication which is slated for January 2020!

Her special book needed a special bookcase all its own. Since she has a rustic, industrial vibe going on in her decor, she thought wood shelves with metal pipes would be a good choice.

Like many of you, she searched Pinterest for inspiration and found one she liked. Follow along as we share how we made it. You'll also find a link to her personal author website where you can purchase your own copy of the book!
Materials for the metal pipe and wood bookcase.
The shelving unit uses very simple materials: metal pipe and 2x6 boards. Those clamps in the front will become super simple bookends.

  • (3) 1/2 in. x 30 in. Black Steel Pipe (Home Depot)

  • (2) Pipe Decor 1/2 in. x 6 in. Black Steel Pipe Connector Industrial Steel Grey (Home Depot)

  • (3) Pipe Decor 1/2 in. x 4 in. Black Steel Pipe Connector Industrial Steel Grey (Home Depot)

  • (5) Pipe Decor 1/2 in. Black Iron FPT x FPT Tee (2-Pack) (Home Depot)

  • (5) 1/2 in. Black Iron 90-Degree FPT x FPT Elbow (2-Pack) (Home Depot)

  • (3) Pipe Decor 1/2 in. Black Iron Cap (2-Pack) (Home Depot)

Clean the metal pipes with mineral spirits.
Metal pipes are dirty! They have to be cleaned using mineral spirits. I used a Scotch green scrubbing pad and old t-shirts to scrub them clean. Wear gloves to protect your hands. Then I sealed them with wax.
Cutting the shelving boards to length.
Steph cut 3 boards to 35" on the miter saw.
How to make a hanging wall shelf with metal pipes.
Here Steph is test fitting the parts.
Drilling holes in the boards with a spade bit.
Here Steph is drilling holes with a spade bit which is just a bit larger in diameter than the pipes. Good quality spade bits makes this easy.
Test fitting all the metal pieces with the boards in place.
Test fitting all the metal pieces with the boards in place. Once everything was fitted, the boards were sanded, distressed, and stained. Be sure to watch the video to see the entire process.
Hanging the industrial pipe shelf on the wall.
This was the hardest part. We decided we needed three people to hang it so my husband came over and held it while we screwed it into place. It's important to keep the shelves level as you attach it to the wall.

Those clamps are put onto the boards upside down to function as bookends. Simple and easy and so in keeping with the industrial theme!

Do you see the "S"? We turned it around from our original idea so it formed an S for Steph!
