A few months ago an extension cord got stuck in my leaf blower. Everyone in the family tried removing it but it would not budge. We decided there was no hope removing the cord so we cut the cord off the leaf blower in order to replace the plug. Watch the video above to see the project.

We made sure the other end of the cable was unplugged from an outlet. We use wire cutters to snip the cable.

Next we open the new plug which we picked up from Home Depot. There are many different plugs to choose from. Find one that will meet your needs.

Inside we find the three terminal screws. The black wire will go to the brass screw, white wire to silver, and the green ground wire to green.

Next we cut a section off the jacket, making sure not to cut the three wires inside.

Using our wire cutters we strip a section of insulation from the end of the three wires.

We insert the wires in the correct terminal and screw them in.

Now we close the plug. This plug has spacers that can be removed for thicker cables. We remove the spacers and screw the plug together.

And that's when we realized we put the wrong plug on this end of the cable. Off to Home Depot to get a female plug.

We got a plug with a little different design than our first one. On this one the cable feeds through the back and wraps around the terminal screws.

We use a black stick to help get the cables nice and tight. The same idea here, the white neutral wire goes to the silver screw. The black hot wire goes to the brass screw. And the green ground wire goes to the green terminal screw.

This plug was a little more work to wire as you have to wrap the wires around the screws. Take a look at how the wires connect to the plug when buying one.

We place the plug back together and tighten.

Now we have a male and female plug on the extension cord.

We plugged the cord into this fan and it works!
Adding a new plug to an extension cable is an easy tasks with a little practice. This is great if you need a specific length for a cord, a broken prong, or a stuck plug like we did.
