When I spotted a couple of bags of wood vase filler at the thrift store, I knew I needed to add them to my DIY stash of “raw” materials. Sure enough, I thought they would be great to use in the transformation of a very 90’s folk art tray.
Materials:
  • Wood tray (found at thrift store)
  • Wood vase filler
  • Primer spray paint
  • Oil rubbed bronze spray paint
  • Silver craft paint
  • 1” or wider bristle paint brush (not a foam one)
  • Paper towel
  • Sand paper (optional)
  • Mod Podge

Steps:
  • Be sure the tray is free of dust, dirt, and grease.
  • Spray the inside and outside of the tray with primer. Let dry—sand any rough spots. Spray again if needed to cover the design.
  • Spray inside and outside of tray with oil rubbed bronze. Repeat if necessary.
  • Dip the brush into the silver craft paint, brush off excess onto paper towel and dry brush paint very lightly onto tray.
  • Spread a small amount of Mod Podge into  a small area on the bottom of the tray. Place wood vase filler pieces into place. This is slow going, tedious work! Plan on binge watching your favorite Fuller House episodes!
  • When the bottom is completely covered, add a coating of Mod Podge over the entire area. Let dry and enjoy your new rustic, industrial look tray.

I'm really happy with how this turned out and so is Steph. Somehow this made its way over to her house and now holds her TV remotes. I always call it a success when Steph likes my projects enough to steal them!

This is really beautiful. May I ask about the lovely deer tea light holders? Want those!

Thanks TJ! The deer tea light holders were actually a thrift store find after Christmas. I looked but can't find any brand name on them.
