Learn how to add a rusted look to furniture and a smooth metallic table top.
Ever had one of those projects that seemed to take a long time to finish? This little Starbucks’ decor inspired table was that kind of project for us!

Many months ago we saw a little side table at our neighborhood Starbucks that we thought we could DIY. The Starbucks table had a metal base with a wood top--very industrial looking.

We got a quick pic of our inspiration. You can see the metal base and wood top.
I had previously seen this tutorial by Rogue Engineer for a rusted metal finish and thought it would be a fun technique to use. We found the perfect thrift store table and started the process.

I followed the tutorial by Rogue Engineer. The magic ingredient in making a faux rusted finish is mixing sand into chalkboard paint! I finished the base faux finish and that is when things came to a standstill. We needed to get another look at the table before we decided on the top finish, but every time we stopped in to get a picture, the table was in use. It’s kind of awkward to take a pic while someone is at the table!
Well, fast forward to this past January. We were working on repairing Steph's garage floor and knew we’d have some of the metallic coating left over. We started preparing things we could use and realized the long-negelected faux rusted finish table would be a perfect candidate for a metallic finished top.

Like all projects, this was started with a good cleaning.
Materials:
  • Black paint--we used a flat black that we had on hand
  • Spray Primer
  • Sand (Amazon) The sand I used was more coarse than used in the tutorial.
  • Paintbrush
  • Aged Metallic Rust spray paint (once the paint/sand mixture is dry, randomly highlight areas with this spray paint)
  • Leftover, premixed RockSolid Garage Floor Coating in metallic Silver (Amazon)
  • Sander

Everything, with the exception of the top was painted with the mixture.

The coating is very reflective and looks great with different light! This is Steph's lumio light.

This table might have been a long time in the making, but we are happy that inspiration struck and we decided to use the floor coating. The finish is so mirror-like and modern. It was a great use of the leftover floor coating. And Steph found a place for it in her house right away!

This is another great "use what you have" project. How would you have finished this table?

Hi Susan, I got this light at the MoMA store in New York. You might be able to get it online though.
