Most everything we use in the garage is built for long use, but there are things that are "one and done!" Those are our consumables.

In this post we share 12 consumables we use most often and are sure to always have on hand in the workshop.

Products:

  • Kirkland Signature Nitrile Exam Gloves (Costco)

  • Titebond 1 gal. Premium Wood Glue (Home Depot)

  • Kirkland Signature Baby Wipes Fragrance Free (Costco)

  • Scott Shop Towels (Costco)

  • Wooden Paint Sticks (Home Depot)

  • Large 4-Cup Capacity Clear Plastic Measuring Cups (Dollar Tree)

  • Disposable Mixing Cups (Amazon)

  • DIABLO 5 in. 80-Grit SandNet Disc (Home Depot)

  • DIABLO SandNET Reusable Hand Sanding Block with Assorted Reusable Sandpaper Sheets (80, 120, 220 Grit) (Home Depot)

  • Krud Kutter 1 gal. Original Concentrated Cleaner/Degreaser (Home Depot)

  • Plastic Razor Blade Scraper (Amazon)

1) Gloves

Nitrile exam gloves from Costco.
As we all know, DIY can be messy or potentially damaging to skin. We almost always go through a few pairs of gloves when working to protect from those messes, like painting or potential damage like working with chemicals.

2) Wood Glue

Glue keeper and silicone brush from rocker, Titebond glue by the galloon from Home Depot.
Forget those small bottles of glue! We buy it by the gallon. My favorite way to use it is to transfer it to this glue keeper from Rockler and apply it with a silicone brush which is also from Rockler.

3) Baby Wipes

Baby wipes from Costco clean up all the things not just baby bottoms!
These handy baby wipes from Costco are great for cleaning up glue squeeze out, hand cleaning, workshop cleanup and more.

4) Shop Towels

Scott Shop towels from Costco.
Shop towels are like paper towels but thicker and stronger. We keep them handy on our Wall Control paper towel holder.

5) Paint Sticks

Buy extra paint sticks at Home Depot.
Paint sticks are a must for stirring paint and crafty projects and come in two sizes: regular for gallon cans and larger ones for 5 gallons cans. Home Depot also sells small sticks which we use for stirring epoxy and things like spackle.

6) Cheap Paint Roller

Buy small paint rollers at Home Depot or Walmart.
Small disposable paint rollers come in so handy for small jobs, touch up or anytime you don't want to have to cleanup your rollers after working. These are from the Dollar Tree which are no longer available but similar rollers can be found at Home Depot and Walmart.

7) T-Shirt Rag

Free t-shirt rags for the garage using old t-shirts.
We cut up our old t-shirts to make rags for the garage. Our favorite use is for adding wax to projects and for wiping on and wiping off stain. We cut ours using a mat and rotary cutter. After cutting, pop them in the dryer on the air only setting to knock off any loose fibers and lint.

8) Epoxy Stuff

Mix up TotalBoat tableTop epoxy in Dollar Tree plastic measuring cups.
Mixing epoxy is messy, messy work! Plastic mixing containers are a must. I like these 4-cup measuring cups from the Dollar Tree. I can usually get quite bit of service out of them before the dried epoxy is to difficult to remove or the handles or spouts break.

9) Sandpaper

Buy Diablo SandNet sandpaper at the Home Depot.
We were introduced to Diablo SandNet sandpaper when it first came onto the market. It's been our "go to" sandpaper ever since. They now also make a sanding block that uses the same SandNet but in rectangular form.

10) Krud Kutter

Buy Krud Kutter by the gallon concentrate at the Home Depot.
We've tried various general cleaners but always come back to Krud Kutter. We buy it by the gallon. It's a concentrate so it lasts a long time.

11) Plastic Razor Blades

Buy the plastic razor blade from Amazon.
Such a simple, unassuming tool! We use this thing all the time! We got it from Amazon and it came with 200 plastic blades. It's a disposable, but we won't be needing to get a new one anytime soon. This replaces the razor blade scraper you probably have in your tool box right now.

12) Puppy Pads

We buy puppy pads at Costco.
We have no puppies or dogs with bathroom issues, but we do use puppy pads. They are invaluable to protect work surfaces and to sop up water spills/floods when necessary. We like the large size that Costco sells.
So, do you agree with these 12 items? What do you use that we should add to our list?

I must point out that an honorable mention must go to Scotch-Brite green scrubbing pads.We buy these at Home Depot. They are large so we cut them into 8 pieces. The smaller size is usually all you need for whatever you are cleaning. I also keep a supplies of these small pieces in the kitchen for hand washing dishes.
