For the past three years, the view out Steph's living room windows has been of a two-ladder plant stand we build and installed in the space. We've gotten used to the view and couldn't imagine not having the ladder plant stand out there.

But a few months ago we noticed there was a lot of deterioration in the wood. In fact, so much so that it was in danger of falling over. We decided to take it down and replace it with, wait for it...another two-ladder plant stand!

This time, we are making our own ladders out of pressure treated wood which should stand up better to our Florida weather.

Materials/Tools:

  • (8) 8ft Pressure Treated 2x4 ($9.48) (Home Depot)

  • 6ft Pressure Treated 2x4 ($7.58) (Home Depot)

  • Pressure Treated 2x10 (Home Depot)

  • (2) 8ft Dog Ear Pickets 1x6 ($4.18) (Home Depot)

  • (4) 6ft Dog Ear Pickets 1x6 ($2.08) (Home Depot)

  • SPAX Exterior Screws #8x2-1/2 ($13.98) (Home Depot)

  • SPAX #8x1-1/2 T-Star Plus Wafer Head Exterior Screw (13.98) (Home Depot)

  • Makita 18-Volt 5.0Ah X2 LXT Lithium-Ion (36V) Brushless Cordless 10 in. Dual-Bevel Sliding Compound Miter Saw with Laser Kit (Home Depot)

  • Titebond III 16 oz. Ultimate Wood Glue (Home Depot)

  • Olympic Elite 1 gal. Petrified Wood Solid Advanced Exterior Stain and Sealant in One (Home Depot)

  • Olympic Elite 1 gal. Midnight Blue Solid Advanced Exterior Stain and Sealant in One (Home Depot)

  • RIDGID 18V Cordless 5 in. Random Orbit Sander (Home Depot)

  • Sandpaper (Home Depot)

We bought the pressure treated wood for the 2-ladder plant stand at The Home Depot.
Off to Home Depot we went to shop for the pressure treated wood we needed. We wanted to buy the wood well in advance of using it so it would have plenty of time to dry out in the garage.
Here is a graphic showing the cuts we made in the pressure treated wood.
This is the cut list--pretty simple!

Cutting angles on the 2x4s with a Makita battery powered miter saw.
The ladders are each made with four pieces of 2x4 cut to six feet with a 15 degree angle cut on each end. We did this on all eight of the legs. A miter saw makes this easy and accurate.
The 12 ladder rungs are each 15 inches long.
There are a total of 12 rungs. These are also cut from 2x4s at a length of 15 inches each.
Once we decided on the placement of the rungs, we used one of the 15 degree cut-off pieces to mark where each rung was to be placed.

Assembling the ladders was definitely a team effort to get everything lined up properly.

Steph used the cut-off jig again to mark the placement of the screws so they would be uniform in appearance.
Steph used the cut-off jig again to mark the placement of the screws so they would be uniform in appearance. She simply marked the screw locations on the jig then transferred this marking to the ladder. Easy and so helpful!
We then screwed the top of the ladders into this top board to secure the entire thing.
We cut two pieces from the 2x10 board that were 18 inches long. We then screwed the top of the ladders into this top board to secure the entire thing.
Sanding the fence pickets to prepare them for staining.
After cutting the fence pickets to size for the shelves, we gave them a quick sand to prep them for stain. This was messy but a necessary step to get a good ultimate finish. Wear all the PPE for this step.

The build is finished--now time for stain!
We are using Olympic Elite Stain and Sealant to stain the stand and the shelves.
We are using Olympic Elite Solid Advanced Stain and Sealant in One to stain the stand and the shelves. We did a social media sponsorship with The Home Depot to showcase this product.
We love these colors! Midnight blue for the shelves and Petrified gray for the ladders.
We love these colors! Midnight blue for the shelves and Petrified gray for the ladders. Both colors complement the outside of Steph's house as well as the inside.
Staining with Olympic Elite stain and sealant.
We got one-coat coverage with both colors. We did a little touch up after it dried where we had missed a few spots. It goes on really easy.

I have all the heart eyes for this blue! I'm thinking it may just show up at my house in the near future!

It was so much fun to shop for plants and flowers at the garden department at the Home Depot.
We added an assortment of spring greenery and flowers to the stand. It's nice to have this view back!
This was the perfect spring project and an easy one as well. With different colors and plants, you can make it to suit your outdoor decor!

This one should be around a very long time!

Please note: This is not a sponsored post. However, The Home Depot did sponsor us to showcase the Olympic Elite products on social media. All opinions are our own.
