Learn how to refresh your kitchen with new knob and pull hardware from The Home Depot!
Liberty Hardware introduced a new collection of modern knobs and pulls in a variety of finishes at The Home Depot. They asked a group of bloggers, including us, to choose new handles and knobs and showcase them in our own kitchens. Steph's kitchen hardware needed updating so we jumped at the chance to participate!

We've done a couple of projects in Steph's kitchen including changing out the cabinet and drawer hardware when she first moved in. We swapped out 90's gold and white handles for sleeker, simpler, silver ones. Unfortunately, that hardware never matched the cabinet hinges which were still the gold color!

And now, fast forward four years after that first change of hardware. Thanks to the motivation from The Home Depot and Liberty Hardware it was now time to change out the hardware correctly for a more cohesive look!

We've previously taken baby steps to upgrade Steph's kitchen. We added a peel and stick backsplash and a sign to cover the dated scallops over the sink.

Above you can see the silver handles. When we changed out the hardware the first time, we literally did nothing to the cabinets and drawer fronts. In real life, you could still see the outlines of the old hardware and lots of wear and dirt on the cabinets and drawers. Frankly, it was good that Steph didn't realized two of the lightbulbs in her overhead light fixture were out. Dim lighting made the kitchen actually look okay!

It's always a great idea to visit The Home Depot to see what hardware is available.

With The Home Depot's excellent return policy, you can buy several to try out and return what you don't use.

We actually chose hardware from two different collections in two different finishes. We liked the way they worked together. The sleek knobs allow the geometric  handles to be the star. Don't be timid about mixing and matching cabinet hardware. In my kitchen, I actually chose four different designs in two colors and two finishes. You wouldn't think it would work, but it does.

Materials/Tools:

  • Modern Geometric handles (Home Depot)

  • Flared knobs (Home Depot)

  • Kreg Cabinet Hardware Jig (Home Depot)

The cabinets and drawers were really a mess. We just couldn't bring ourselves to just change out the hardware, but decided to  refresh them with paint. We have another post and video showing how we did the painting. It involves having to unexpectedly having to go to Plan B when Plan A didn't work out! DIYing is always an adventure!

Changing out the hardware requires only a Phillips head screwdriver or drill/driver with correct bit. What you see here is the drill/driver inside the drawer as we unscrew the screws. It's best to hold the old handle in place as you unscrew.

We decided to replace the drawer handles with a single knob. We used a Kreg hardware jig to easily and precisely drill a hole in the center of the drawer front.

The original holes were filled and then sanded flush once dried. Once painted, the original holes disappeared.

Hold the handle or knob as you tighten from the back. The hardware comes with two sets of screws for all thicknesses of cabinets.

To attach the knobs, push the screw in through the back, screw on the knob and tightened with a screwdriver.

Use a drill/driver or screwdriver. They both work well.

All done! We actually changed out the hinge hardware while we were changing out the handles and knobs. The hinges are also Liberty Hardware from The Home Depot.

If your cabinets are in good condition, this kitchen refresh will take you very little time. The thing that will take the most time is deciding on which of the beautiful handles and knobs to use! It's like jewelry for your kitchen!

What's your favorite finish for cabinet hardware? Matte, shiny, black, white, gold, oh so many to choose from!
