A long overdue makeover of my garage is well underway. We've partnered with The Home Depot to  transform my garage from useless and full of clutter to an organized workspace that will also have room to park my car! Along the way we will be sharing videos about each step of the process. In the videos and posts we will share the tools, supplies, and products we are using.

In this video, we are sharing some of the painting tips we have learned from our many DIY painting projects. Please add your own tips in the comments so we can learn from each other!

Painting Supplies:

  • Swiffer (Home Depot)
  • Swiffer sheets (Home Depot)
  • HDX All purpose cleaner (Home Depot)
  • Dremel Versa Power Cleaner (Home Depot)
  • Ryobi Battery powered caulk gun (Home Depot)
  • DAP spackle (Home Depot)
  • 3M tape/plastic (Home Depot)
  • Pour spout (Home Depot)
  • Purdy Brush (Home Depot)
  • Wooster roller/frame (Home Depot)
  • Large roller/frame (Home Depot)
Use a Swiffer to clean walls and ceiling.
Before any painting is started, you have to prep the room. Cleaning the walls and ceiling of dust, mud dauber nests, and spiderwebs was a must before we ever got started. A Swiffer was a great tool to wipe down the walls.
Clean the baseboards with an all purpose cleaner.
Next, we took the time to clean the baseboards and moldings around the door. Since we were going to come back and caulk the baseboards it was really important to get them really clean. We used an all-purpose cleaner.
Using the Dremel Versa power cleaner.
For some of the more difficult to clean baseboards we used the Dremel Versa power cleaner. It cuts through tough dirt without arm and hand fatigue. #thdprospective

Dremel Versa Power Cleaner here.

The Ryobi battery powered caulk gun.
We had a LOT of caulking to do in the garage, but this Ryobi battery powered caulk gun made quick work of the project!
Tip, put a stool on a dolly and roll yourself as you apply caulk.
Here's a tip for more efficient caulking. We set a stool on top of a furniture dolly. Steph was able to scoot along at a quick rate assuring a perfect bead of caulk. After applying the caulk, she rolled herself on the stool/dolly to smooth out the caulk with her finger.
Use spackle to patch holes in walls and ceilings.
Take time to patch any holes or imperfections in the walls and ceilings. Make sure the patches are dry, sanded, and cleared of dust before painting. We have a video you can watch about the two types of spackle we tried out.
Tape off and cover stuff to keep it paint free.
It is way easier to tape off and cover stuff than to clean up spattered paint afterwards. We really like this 3M tape and plastic product for taping off windows and more. We used thin plastic to drape over things we couldn't move.
You'll need stir sticks, can opener and a pouring spout.
When you're picking up your paint in the store, be sure to get stir sticks, can openers, and a special pouring spout for the can. You can also get a pouring spout that fits on the 5 gallon bucket. We used one and it was well worth what we paid for it!
Buy good quality painting supplies.
Don't go cheap on your actual painting supplies. Good quality rollers, brushes, and brush frames makes a lot of difference in using and applying paint.
Store brushes and rollers wrapped in plastic wrap in the fridge.
If you're going to be painting over a number of days, a good tip is to wrap your brushes and rollers in plastic wrap and store them in the fridge. We use this tip every time we paint. We save the washing of brushes and rollers untill we are finished with the job. We really like Glad Press n' Seal wrap for this.
Use skin lotion on exposed skin.
Paint really sticks to skin as you probably have learned. Prior to painting we slather lotion on any exposed skin. Doing this makes it very easy to wash the paint away. We don't have one to recommend, but the thicker ones that don't seem to melt away into the skin seems to be best.
Protect yourself from paint with hat and goggles.
Finally, make sure you're ready to paint by prepping yourself. Old clothes are a must, pull back your hair or wear a hat, and wear safety goggles when painting overhead. Paint dropped into your eyes is never a good thing!

There is a lot more to painting than brushes and rollers. With these tips your can get your room and yourself ready prior to actually putting paint on the walls!

Painting takes a little effort, but can totally change the look of a space. We didn't do anything more than give the garage a coat of fresh white paint, but what a difference it made. It is starting to look like a space where we really want to work.
