Using Ryobi Drain Auger to Unclog Shower

We recently added another tool to our already large collection of Ryobi 18V One+ tools. This new tool is the Ryobi 18V drain auger.

With no shortage of drains to clean at both of our houses, we thought this would make a good purchase and would quickly pay for itself by bypassing the cost of a plumber visit.

This is one of three versions Ryobi offers. This is the entry level model which we thought would be fine for our home maintenance needs.

This version does not come with a battery or charger. We have many batteries so the "tool only" version was perfect for us. There's a user manual inside, so take a little time to become familiar with the use of the tool.

There's a clear plastic cap that comes on the end of the auger. Save that to put back on the tool when you're finished using it.

In our test of the tool, we used it in two showers, two sinks, and one tub. We started by pouring water down the drain to see how slow it was draining. Also, if the water had continued to stand it would be obvious when we cleared the drain as the water would be released.

We inserted the cable into the drain as instructed in the manual and continued to feed the cable into the drain until we felt like it was in far enough.

Whoa! Considering this drain had continue to drain, this huge mass of hair and soap was a big surprise! This is what happens when you don't keep the drain cover in place!

Pouring water in the drain showed that the drain was now free flowing.

Steph retracted the cable slowly and caught drips with a cloth to help dry it before it entered the tool. Here's a great look at that Ryobi LED light that we use ALL THE TIME. It is also part of the One+ system.

With the success of the shower, we were motivated to try the sink. It was not terrible, but after using the auger it drains much more effectively.

How to unclog a tub drain with the Ryobi 18V one+ drain auger.

Now to try clearing a tub drain. First, start by removing the cover from the overflow. Add something to cover the drain so you don't accidentally lose the screws.

Snake the tube through the overflow opening.

The snake goes right in here to clear any obstructions the drain may have.

When you're finished, put the stopper and the overflow cover back into place.

We also worked in Steph's shower. The video will give you more insight into what she is doing here and also a warning about why you should not skip wearing protective eye wear.

And finally, we tried it a fifth time on Steph's sink. It worked again and the drain is now draining as it should.

Cleaning out the five drains was easy and efficient. All the drains now drain quickly and without issue.

This $79 tool is a very cost effective and chemical free way to clear the drains in a home. It is certainly a DIY that most homeowners can do themselves.
