There is an ongoing debate about having a TV in a bedroom. Steph just recently decided she DID want one in her room 'cause who doesn't want to watch a movie all cozy in a nice warm bed?

Although she wanted one in the room she didn't want to "see" it all the time. She came up with a clever wall-hung unit that hides the TV when not in use.

Materials/Tools:

  • VIZIO 32" Class D-Series FHD LED Smart TV - D32fM-K (Amazon)

  • 10ft 1x8 board

  • 6ft 1x4 board

  • 20”x31” thin front

  • Cable cover for two cables

  • Everbilt 4.4 lbs. Magnetic Catch, White (Home Depot)

  • Everbilt 1-1/2 in. x 48 in. Bright Nickel Continuous Hinge (Home Depot)

  • OOK 200 lbs. French Cleat Picture Hanger with Wall Dog Mounting Screws (Home Depot)

  • Remote Tray (Amazon)

  • Milwaukee M18 FUEL 18V 10 in. Lithium-Ion Brushless Cordless Dual Bevel Sliding Compound Miter Saw Kit (Home Depot)

  • Kreg Pocket-Hole Jig 720PRO (Home Depot)

  • DIABLO 2 in. Carbide Hole Saw (Home Depot)

  • Grip Corner Clamp Clips (Amazon)

  • Kreg Multi-Mark (Amazon)

  • DEWALT 20V MAX Cordless Band Saw (Home Depot)

How to make a wall-hung TV cabinet.
The build uses a 10 foot 1x8 inch board and one 1x4 inch board. We made all the cuts on our Milwaukee miter saw.
How to make a wood TV box that hangs on the wall.
This is the box all laid out before anything was glued and screwed together.
The TV cabinet is assembled with glue and pocket hole screws.
The box is constructed with pocket holes. Here Steph is using a Kreg pocket hole jig to add pocket holes.
Those blue Rockler corner clamps keep the corners square and in place while screwing in the pocket hole screws.

The Kreg multi mark is the perfect tool for getting the depth of the inset for the French cleat correct.
The box will hang from a French cleat on the wall. This back support is inset the depth of the cleat in order for the box to sit flush on the wall. The Kreg multi mark is the perfect tool for getting the depth correct.
Making the front of the TV wall-hung cabinet.
For the front of the unit, we used a thin piece of plywood that had seen use as a scrap board. With a bit of wood putty and sanding, the imperfections disappeared.
A continuous hinge was used to mount the lid to the rest of the box.

Magnetic catches were added to the inner front edge to hold the front cover in place to hide the TV

The French cleat was screwed onto the back support at the top.
One half of the French cleat was screwed onto the back support.
The other half of the French cleat was screwed onto the wall and then the unit was put into place

The TV from Sam's Club fit perfectly into the new space.
After some adjustments to the legs of the TV, we had a perfect fit!
The TV cabinet looks like art when not in use.

To watch, you simply lower the lid and put it back when finished.
You can get this remote tray from Amazon.
This purchased tray fits on the nightstand or can be moved to the bed. It holds all the remotes plus a pair of Blue light blockers which is essential for nighttime screen watching.
The new TV cabinet is a nice addition to the space. It's great that it doesn't take up any floor space and is not in Tosh's the greyhounds way as she goes in and out of the room.

One of the problems with a TV in a bedroom is that nighttime viewing on it or any screen can interfere with sleep. We both have found wearing blue light glasses solves the problem of potential sleep issues due to late evening viewing.
