This free-standing tabletop bookshelf is highly customizable to your needs. We sized ours to fit the book (Steph's memoir, you can find more about it here) we were displaying and for the space where it would sit. Different widths or lengths of lumber can make it fit your needs.
We used a Makita battery powered miter saw to make the cuts on the bookshelf.
We started by making a fresh cut on the 2"x6" board we are using. This gives a nice edge and you don't have to bother taking off the sticky label!

Tools/ Materials:

  • 2 in. x 6 in. Lumber (Home Depot)

  • (4) 1/2 in. Black Malleable Iron FPT Floor Flange (Home Depot)

  • (2) 1/2 in. Black Iron 90-Degree FPT x FPT Elbow (Home Depot)

  • (2) Pipe Decor 1/2 in. Close Black Iron Pipe Connector (Home Depot)

  • (2) Pipe Decor 1/2 in. x 4 in. Black Steel Pipe Connector Industrial Steel Grey (Home Depot)

  • Wood distressing tools (Online)

We like to use Diablo sandnet for our sanding projects.
We cut the board to 32" and then we did a little sanding to remove all the black lettering on the board.
Distressing the board with Varathane Distressing tools.
To make our new board look old, we used these Varathane distressing tools to add character! These tools don't seem to be on sale any more, but you could DIY your own with nails and metal washers and nuts.
This Kreg marking tool helps to precisely place the book stop.
We attached a single pipe to hold a book in the center. This could be left off, but you could use this space to hold the book you are currently reading. Steph added a small wood dowel to hold the book in place.

Metal bookends complete the bookshelf.
These metal bookends were a last minute addition as we realized we needed support in this area. This is just a pair of simple metal bookends I probably picked up at a yard sale, but you can buy them where office supplies are sold.
The finished pipe and rustic wood bookshelf.
All styled and ready for the conference we used this display at!
