With almost any hobby, sport, or fitness activity, there is always stuff that is needed which then must be stored!

Steph has been utilizing Apple Fitness + for yoga and other exercise and has accumulated a storage tub full of essential gear. Up to now, she's stored that stuff in a storage tub in the living room.  It was not a pretty sight!

She came up with a clever idea to create a mobile storage unit utilizing two panels of Wall Control to store and to hide away her exercise gear. Take a look at how it all came together.

Materials/Tools:

  • 4x8ft Sanded Plywood (Home Depot)

  • (2) Wall Control Slotted Only Panel 32inx16in Yellow (Wall Control)

  • (2) Wall Control Slanted U-Shaped Slotted Hook White (Wall Control)

  • (2) Wall Control 4in Deep Slotted Metal Shelf White (Wall Control)

  • Wall Control 4in Deep Shelf Guard White (Wall Control)

  • (2) Wall Control 2in Slotted Handle Bracket White (Wall Control)

  • 1" Strap Buckle (Amazon)

  • Everbilt 48 in. Continuous Hinge (Home Depot)

  • (8) Everbilt 2 in. Black Polypropylene and Steel Swivel Plate Caster with 125 lb. Load Rating (Home Depot)

  • Everbilt Chest Door Latches (2-Pack) (Home Depot)

  • Makita 18V X2 LXT Lithium-Ion (36V) Brushless Cordless 6-1/2 in. Plunge Circular Saw w/ (2) Batteries 5.0Ah, 55T Blade (Home Depot)

We're making our hidden storage cabinet with plywood from the Home Depot.
We started with a full sheet of 3/4 inch plywood.
We carried the plywood home from Home Depot in our cargo van.
Look, it fits easily in the MDP cargo van!
We used our Makita track saw to cut down the plywood.

Cut List

  • (2) 32in x 16in
  • (4) 17-3/8in x 7-1/8 in
  • (4) 32in x 7-1/8 in

Overall dimensions
  • 33-5/8in x 14-1/4in x 17-1/2in
Assembling the box with the Wall Control panel in place. We used lots of Rockler corner clamps and DeWalt clamps.
We used wood glue to hold our box together. Corner clamps from Rockler and clamps hold it square until everything dries.
Attaching the Wall Control panels to each of the boxes for the exercise cart.
Once the boxes were dry and painted, we screwed the panels in place. The screws that come included with the Wall Control are too long for this application so we purchased wood screws.
We used four wheels on each box for maximum stability when the storage cabinet is open.

To easily move the exercise storage cart we added eight wheels to the bottom.
This is the edited version of the wheel placement. In the first version, the corner wheels touched making it difficult to easily roll the cart. Placing them further apart fixed the situation.
We added a continuous hinge to allow yoga storage system to fully open.

The hidden rolling exercise storage cart is kept closed with two chest latches.
Two latches on the front keep the storage cart securely closed.
Here's an inside look at the rolling exercise storage cart before it was filled with a yoga mat, weights, and other exercise equipment.
Here's the inside before Steph added all her fitness gear. Those black straps were threaded through the panel slats before the panels was secured into the box.
We used vinyl cut on the cricut maker to add a pop of color to the front of the exercise cart.
But wait--there's more! We thought a pop of color in the shape of the Apple Fitness activity rings would be perfect on the front of the cart.
It took three tries, but Steph got the logistics of the cut worked out to create the perfect Apple Fitness activity ring graphic which she cut on the Cricuit Maker.

Once Steph cut the graphic in half it was time to apply it to the front of the exercise cart.

Here's a look at the yoga fitness cart all loaded up with weights and other equipment. h
And here it is with all Steph's fitness equipment. Those weights are 8 pounds each so you can see that the cart easily holds heavy stuff.
Here's the previous storage system for the exercise yoga equipment.
BEFORE
All the exercise equipment is neatly tucked away and out of sight but still accessible.
AFTER
Here's all the things in the exercise cart including a yoga mat and 16 pounds of weights.
What kinds of things would you like to store away? Everything is stored away, but still accessible!
Time to work out!
Let's work out!
This is a great solution to storing all the equipment Steph needs but doesn't want to see.

This design really lends itself to storing a variety of things. Maybe crafts, fabrics, or even build a tall one to use as a pantry if you have a small kitchen.
