Steph wanted a way to store her growing collection of miniature board games as well as a way to elevate a piece of greyhound art.

This fun project accomplishes both of those objectives! Plus, there's a surprise splash of color inside.

Materials/Tools:

  • 1/2in Plywood

  • Makita 18V 5.0Ah X2 LXT Lithium-Ion (36V) Brushless Cordless 10 in. Dual-Bevel Sliding Compound Miter Saw with Laser Kit (Home Depot)

  • Titebond 1 gal. Premium Wood Glue (Home Depot)

  • Rockler Silicone Glue Keeper (Rockler)

  • Oil Rubbed Bronze Spray Paint

We are making our secret storage box with scrap material.
This project starts with a browse through our scrap pile. We came up with exactly what we needed.
Here we are cutting the box pieces to size on a Makita battery powered miter saw.
The measurements of the box are based on the dimensions of the statue that will sit on top of it. Here Steph is cutting all the pieces down to size on the miter saw.
Dry fitting all the box pieces including the drawer before the final assembly.
Before everything was assembled, all the pieces were checked for fit. Everything fit as it should so it was time to add the color!
Rainbow surprise colors inside the box
We are using all the colors of the rainbow! Steph taped all the diagonals before adding paint.
Finishing up the secret paint color inside the drawer.
Once dry, the remaining colors were added.
With wood glue, clamps, and a lot of weights, the box and drawer were assembled.

The finished box before the outside paint is applied.
Here it is all assembled and ready for the final paint.
Steph taped off anything that wasn't getting painted and then sprayed several light coats of Rust-oleum bronze paint to the outside of the box.

The new box functions as a pedestal for the greyhound statue.
Here it is in place under the greyhound statute! The height gives the statue much more presence in this space.
There's a light on the back wall that automatically lights when the drawer is opened.
Open the secret drawer and there are the miniature games!
There's a fun splash of color inside the secret drawer.
The splash of color is a fun surprise!
This project is a perfect example of why we DIY--seeing a need in our homes and customizing and personalizing something to work with that need!
