When Mac, Steph's retired racing greyhound, came home to live with Steph, she was not interested in getting on the furniture. Mac was content to chose any of the many dog beds throughout the house leaving the furniture for the humans.

Well, that came to a screeching halt when Tosh, another retired racing greyhound, entered the picture. Two weeks after adoption, we discovered Tosh was quite happy to make her snuggle place the couch!

(In the video, you can see that first hop up onto the couch which was caught on security camera footage!)

A short while later, Mac decided she too would rather lay on the couch! Now, there was no room for humans!

We dealt with this by buying a small sofa, but this just didn't solve the lack of room for dogs and humans.

This is Steph's solution to the sofa problem. Read on...

Home Reserve Sectional:

  • Tux Left in Archetype Quartz (link)

  • (2) Standard Ottoman in Archetype Anchor (link)

Sleeping greyhounds. One on the couch and the other on a round dog bed.
BEFORE: Sometimes one will sleep on the floor, but other times, Mac will occupy one couch and Tosh the other!
Steph decided to order a DIY sofa kit from Home Reserve.
Steph decided to order a DIY sofa kit. The first step was to pick a fabric: preferably one that did not attract dog fur!
Testing the Home Reserve fabric swatches.
This swatch failed the "dog fur" test.
You can see this one collected not as much fur, but it still wasn't right.

We settled on the Home Reserve Archetype swatch.
This fabric ticked all the boxes--it is washable and passed the "dog rub" test beautifully! Now to pick a color.
Of course the new sofa would need to coordinate with the dogs! The greyhounds were happy to lay still while Steph pondered the color choices.

Time to order the sofa from Home @ Reserve.
With the fabric chosen, it was time to order the sofa pieces.

Home Reserve suggested Steph try the no-risk armless chair test.
Home Reserve suggested Steph try the no-risk armless chair test. It shipped within a week in a nice convenient box which was easy to lift and carry.

Pro tip: lay the box down before you open it. Fortunately, nothing was broken when it all fell out of the box!
Putting together the Home@Reserve chair.
It's like putting together a 3D puzzle! The instructions were clear and assembly took a short time.
Everything is clearly marked and goes together with screws.

Those black connectors are put into place and that is where the screws are placed. You can use a screwdriver, but Steph sped things up with a drill driver.

Almost finished now with the assembly. That space in the bottom is designed for storage! Bonus!

The sample is finished! It is bare on each side as this is a middle piece.

As with anything made with OSB, there is a smell. We decided to take the upholstery off and seal the wood with some leftover paint.

A DIY kit couch may not be for everyone, but for Steph it was. Through her research, she felt like this company, Home Reserve, would be the best option. She was able to get get a sofa in the exact configuration she needed in a dog friendly fabric.

Also, if you've ever ordered a sofa, you know how long it takes. This took about a week and a half to get. It was finished and ready in about another week. That's pretty good!

We will have a few more videos about the full sectional assemble!
